Grand Rapids Fire Dept. rolls out new safety truck

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- After three accidents over eight months involving fire trucks, Grand Rapids has a new tool to keep its first responders safe.

The department converted a dump truck into a response vehicle to be used on area freeways.

Grant money paid for painting, radios, emergency lighting and a siren. It also has an arrow board to alert drivers and equipment to absorb the shock if a car crashes into it.  It will be based at the Franklin Street fire station, 115 Franklin St. SE.

The fire department saw the need after drivers crashed into fire trucks being used to protect accident scenes.

The last one happened in November -- a semi hit a fire truck protecting workers at a crash scene on U.S. 131.

CityFlatsHotel open in downtown Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- A building with more than a century of history in downtown Grand Rapids has a new upscale occupant.

The CityFlatsHotel is open in the former Peck building, which most recently housed Fox Jewelers.

The hotel has 28 guest rooms, each designed and decorated differently.

Holland-based Charter House Innovations owns the hotel and CityFlats location in Holland.

The company designs and makes furniture for restaurants like Burger King and McDonalds, but in the past few years its owners decided to branch out.

"We opened these hotels kind of for two reasons: one, to diversify our business, but also to use them as a showroom because it really gives an opportunity for us to show our clients what our designers and manufacturers capabilities are," says Sarah Lilly with CityFlats marketing. "We have designed and built everything you see in the interior of this hotel."

The hotel also includes a full service restaurant.
