Still Funny: River City Improv

It's a scientific fact that you could burn up to 320 calories during a River City Improv show. Still uproariously funny after 15 years, River City Improv has been inducing good, clean fun on national audiences with its unique short-form style causing each show to be genuinely different. Using the audience both literally and figuratively for two hours, this Calvin College-supported troupe is far superior to both the British and American versions of television show "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" A typical show is, um, atypical. Available for any event requiring a sense of humor, you can catch the troupe and sample its capabilities bimonthly at The Ladies Literary Club for $9 (excluding the $10 March 18 Laughfest show) and monthly at the Gezon Auditorium (also for $9). Be sure to check out rivercityimprov.com for the latest news and events.

Leaders discuss summer learning opportunites for students

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)- Local educators have new strategies for helping children learn over the summer.

Experts from the National Summer Learning Association visited Grand Rapids Tuesday.  They met with local education and community leaders to discuss summer learning opportunities for students.  The workshop focused on what educators in the community can do to prevent summer learning loss.

"Summer learning loss is a national phenomenon that happens with all students who actually aren't engaged in summer activities.  We want to make sure that our children are engaged and that we are extending, or maintaining a level of learning that happens through the school year so that kids come back to school ready to learn in September," said Ashley Stewart with the National Summer Learning Association.

Experts say summer learning programs, camps and interactive activities all help prevent summer learning loss.

Canstruction competition underway in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)- Five teams are putting etiquette aside to play with their food in downtown Grand Rapids.  The groups are turning cans into massive works of art as part of the third annual Canstruction Competition.

The cans will eventually be donated to the Salvation Army's Booth Family Services to feed those in need.

Andrew Howard,  a senior designer with Paradigm Design said, "Fighting hunger is the most important part of this.  And the fact that we were able to donate about 4,700 cans from this sculpture.  So we've been able to about double the number of cans that we donated last year, it'll go a long way."

Howard said, "It's a tougher time this year, and there are fewer teams doing it this year as well, and I think the economy has something to do with that.  So the more we can put in it the better."
