Medieval knights, Civil War soldiers come alive at Grand Rapids Public Museum

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- You did not have to be Ben Stiller to enjoy a night at the museum Monday.

The Grand Rapids Public Museum hosted its annual "Night at Your Museum" event.

For $20 per person, guests watched people dressed as medieval knights dueling with swords and others in Civil War regalia marching and dancing.

The idea is to have museum exhibits come alive as an exciting way to educate guests.

"We have families here having a wonderful evening together, having dinner, being able to listen to the organ, seeing the planetarium in action," says Chris Carron, the museum's director of education. "It's a wonderful way that history really comes alive here at the museum."

This is the fifth year for the event.

UPDATE: Grand Rapids clinic gets big gift for Christmas

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- A Grand Rapids community got an early Christmas gift Friday, one that will help keep people healthy.

"I've been giddy at just how exciting it is.  Sometimes I have to walk through and pinch myself just to know that it is real," said Helen Lehman, board chair of Catherine's Health Center on Leonard and Lafayette in Grand Rapids.

Friday the center unveiled a new 6,800 facility.  Catherine's Health Center is a non profit clinic that provides services to low income and mostly uninsured residents on the city's northeast side.

For the past 15 years they've operated the clinic in a very cramped space in the basement of St. Alphonsus Church.  During which time the need for services has grown tremendously.

Christmas Eve in West Michigan

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)- Downtown Grand Rapids on Christmas EVe 2010 was fairly quiet and casual.  Families took advantage of the calm winter weather by taking to the ice in Rosa Park Circle.

Others ventured out to church services.  During Christmas Eve mass at Saint Andrew's Cathedral in Grand Rapids, there was standing room only.

For 11 years Linda Dochod has ben running Classic Carriage, taking families and couples on horse drawn rides through the heart of Grand Rapids.

The carriage takes riders over and along the Grand River, past the Ford Museum, and by other various holiday attractions.

Overall, while it was a quiet night, the Dornhos family felt it was a unique way to spend a cold Christmas eve together.
