GR commissioner misses meeting for movie shoot

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) -- Chickens took a backseat to pigskins -- and movie cameras -- for a western Michigan city commissioner.

The Grand Rapids Press reports Saturday that Grand Rapids 3rd Ward Commissioner James White was shooting scenes the night of Aug. 10 for "Touchback" starring Kurt Russell.

White missed a meeting where commissioners killed a proposed ordinance to allow residents to keep hens in backyards.

White declined to discuss the issue but praised Russell. The ordinance lost by a 3-3 vote.

The 70-year-old community theater veteran plays an assistant coach alongside Russell.

The movie that co-stars Melanie Lynskey and Christine Lahti is shooting this month in and around Grand Rapids.

White had a role this summer in the Mario Van Peebles-directed "Things Fall Apart."
