GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)-  John Ball Zoo hopes that the $2.00 discount on admission this week will encourage visitors to help the zookeepers with their animal enrichment program.

Here is a list of what the zoo would like you to bring!

Sugar Cane - An edible "toy" that takes a long time to consume.

Sugar Free Kool-Aid - Sometimes frozen in a bucket along with fruit or vegetables and even a rat or mouse can be a cooling popsicle!

Dried Fruits - A treat alone or mixed with other food items.

Saltines - Crumbled over a bowl of food. Alone as a treat.

Sugar Free Cereal - Same as above.

Mixed Nuts (w/shell) - Another special treat that takes a little effort to consume

Pasta - Yes, it's not uncommon to see a pot full of noodles boiling on the Zoo kitchen stove. The pasta is used to change up a diet, as a treat, or just alone.

Rice - Same as above

Syrup - Sometimes drizzled around an exhibit so the animals happen to come across the sweet treat. Sometimes used to change the flavor of a food to encourage an appetite. Also used in the tubes around the chimpanzee exhibit to demonstrate how chimps use tools to dig for food.

Molasses - Same as above.

Honey - Same as above.

Canned Pumpkin - Could be stuffed inside a coconut or kong toy to create a little "job" for a food reward.

Rawhides - To keep an animal busy and teeth clean.

Pig Ears - Same as above.

Pickles - Who doesn't like a crispy pickle snack?

All Natural Peanut Butter - Sooo many uses around the zoo from smearing around exhibit, to mixing with food, to packing a coconut or kong toy.

Cuttle Bones - Chew toy.

NON FOOD ITEMS:

Rotary Car Wash Brush - Cleaning

Large Mirrors (larger than hand mirror) - Just like birds and even humans, almost all the animals like to see themselves. We need larger mirrors for the larger animals so they can see their entire body - not just their eyes!

Livestock Brushes - To keep animals coats shiny and clean

Hunting Lures - Scents are a favorite of the cats. They'll follow a trail for hours.

Small Brown Paper Lunch Sacks - A help to transport food.

Kong Toys (Black) - Tough chew toys!

Boomer Balls

Tupperware (Cereal Box Size)

DON'T NEED:

Mustard, Canned Goods, Oatmeal, Canned Cat Food
