NEWS RELEASE:

GRAND RAPIDS (January 10, 2011) One Book, One City for Kids, a citywide reading initiative for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders, announces this year’s selection is "Ellie McDoodle: New Kid in School" by Ruth McNally Barshaw.

One Book, One City for Kids is an annual reading program encouraging 4,5 & 6th grade readers to read and discuss the same book each winter. The program also strives to encourage a life-long love of reading among middle school-age readers, inspire readers to bring story ideas and themes to life through discussion, and build collaborative ties between public libraries, school libraries, and area schools.

This year the entire city will be reading "Ellie McDoodle: New Kid in School" by Ruth McNally Barshaw. In this book, Ellie writes and doodles in a journal of her family’s move to a new home and her struggle to make friends, which gets a lot easier as she leads a nonviolent protest of long lunch lines at school. For any kid who’s ever felt like an outsider looking in, Ellie’s journal captures the frustration, the nervousness, and the occasional happy surprise of making a fresh start.
