He has been writing about religion in West Michigan since 1994, and is former editor of The Press’ award-winning religion section. A reporter and editor for nearly 35 years, Charles has published articles in Christianity Today magazine and in the books Thin Ice and Heart & Soul. He is an adjunct instructor in journalism and mass media at Grand Rapids Community College, and at Grand Valley State University where he teaches the interdisciplinary course Life Journey. Charles serves on the steering committee of the 2012 Year of Interfaith Understanding and was an organizer of GRPS Arts Advocates. He has a BS in English from Murray State University.

Honey, who speaks candidly on issues of spirituality and humanity at his online blog,  is  fascinated with the spirituality of the Beatles. He says, “For all that has been written and said about the Beatles’ cultural legacy, relatively little attention has been paid to their spiritual impact. Their music opened listeners’ minds to a more wondrous, adventurous and love-based view of life, while their individual quests increased popular interest in Eastern religious practices. This course will explore the spiritual elements of Beatles music and band members’ religious views through selected readings, video clips and, of course, extensive listening to their songs and class members response to them.”

The Beatles, whether one admits it or not were catalysts in changing the course of spirituality. In a time when people were hardened by traditions, politics, racism and the fear of nuclear obliteration, the four young men from Liverpool transported us out of ourselves for a moment. Through it all they touched our souls, moved us and changed us in ways we never thought possible.
