Grandville Avenue families reap rewards of song with 'Sing With Me!'

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—Experts say singing can help improve a child’s vocabulary, walking skills and ability to recollect things.

Now families living in the Grandville Avenue area have a chance to reap the rewards of song for free with “Sing With Me!”  Opera Grand Rapids and the Grandville Avenue Arts Center have teamed up for the early childhood class, which is open to adults and children age three and under.  The class takes place each Wednesday, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Grandville Avenue Cook Arts Center, located at 644 Grandville Ave. SW. 

“Early childhood music is in and of itself extremely important way to teach communication. When a baby hears music their eyes light up,” said Sing With Me! instructor Carol Hillman.

Poet Thomas Lux leads free event at Aquinas College

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—Poet and author Thomas Lux will visit West Michigan Wednesday for the Aquinas College Contemporary Writers Series.

The event, which runs from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Wege Ballroom, is free and open to the public.

Lux, who’s written several books, is known for pairing humor with existentialism.  His many awards and honors include the Kinglsley Tufts Poetry Award, a Guggenheim fellowship, and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Lux’s life has taken him across the country.   Born in Northampton, Massachusetts in 1946, Lux attended Emerson College and the University of Iowa. He taught at Sarah Lawrence College for more than 20 years.  Lux currently serves as the Bourne chair in poetry at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Auction September 28 to transform courthouse into museum

ROCKFORD, Mich.— Organizers are hoping for a bidding frenzy Saturday as the Rockford Area Historical Society holds a silent auction to help pay for the new Rockford Area Museum.

Bidding in the silent auction will begin at 10 a.m. at Rockford City Hall.  A live auction will kick off at 1 p.m. under a tent in the City Hall parking lot.  The entire event is expected to wrap up by 3 p.m.

West Michigan's own Iron Chef competition unfolds September 24

You don’t have to switch your TV to the Food Network tonight to catch an Iron Chef competition.

Eight teams of student chefs will try to out-cook one another Tuesday, September 24 during the 2013 Cascade Iron Chef competition.   Chefs from the Grand Rapids Community College Secchia Institute for Culinary Education will prepare gourmet cuisine using the "secret ingredient" for a chance to take home the iron skillet award and a college scholarship.  WZZM 13’s Valerie Lego will emcee the competition, which will be judged by a panel of local celebrities.  The judging panel includes:

Fundraiser September 22 for scholarship in honor of late chef

A fundraiser to establish a scholarship fund in honor of Chef Mark Noseda will take place September 22.

Noseda passed away August 16, a day before the soft opening of Freighters in Port Huron.  Noseda was an executive chef for Meritage Hospitality Group, which includes Twisted Rooster in My Town Ada/Cascade and Crooked Goose in My Town Walker. He was 35 years old.

A scholarship fund in Noseda’s name is being established to support culinary students attending Grand Rapids Community College’s Secchia Institute for Culinary Education.  Sunday's fundraiser will run from noon to 3 p.m.  at Amore Trattoria Italiana Restaurant, located at 5080 Alpine Ave.

Organizer of Christian music summer concert series hopes to expand next year

ROCKFORD, Mich.-- "The old adage, 'You build it - they will come' is spot-on when describing the huge success of Rockford's 2013 Praise in the Park summer concert series," said Rockford city council member Steve Jazwiec during the September Rockford City Council meeting.

Jazwiec was responding to a recap presentation by former Rockford city council member Rich Moll, who organized Praise in the Park. 

The event is staged in the beautiful confines of Garden Club Park adjacent to the Rogue River and the iconic Rogue River Dam every summer Sunday evening, from June through August. Praise in the Park, in its second season, has seen attendance grow week after week.
