Grand Rapids considers solar powered parking meters

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—A new era of parking may be coming to Grand Rapids.

During its regular meeting 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, the city fiscal committee will consider a resolution agreeing to a 90-day trial of credit card meter parking.  Under the contract, IPS Group Inc. would install 22 of its solar powered specialty meters. If the meters remain after the trial period, the city will owe $15 per month per meter.

Each meter would accept coins, credit cards and debit cards through a wireless web-based management system. City parking rates would apply.

If the trial was successful in generating more city revenue and winning over drivers, Grand Rapids Parking Services would consider expanding the system.
