My Town GR: Historical storefront to welcome a Michigan first

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.---  A historic storefront in downtown Grand Rapids is one step closer to being transformed into a franchise new to Michigan.

During this month’s regular meeting, the Grand Rapids Downtown Development Authority Board of Directors approved a grant to renovate the historic storefront at 40 Ionia Avenue SW for a new restaurant. TiJu Ventures,  LLC wants to operate a Saladworks in the space.  The Philadelphia-based restaurant chain specializes in fresh, made-to-order salads, sandwiches and soups.

The $10,000 grant will be used to install a new fire suppression system, add a second entryway, and create a barrier-free entrance and restrooms that are compliant with the American with Disabilities Act. The entire project is expected to cost about $610,000.

The DDA also approved a signage grant of $2,000 toward the business’ new signs, which is expected to cost a total of $18,500.
