Engine House No. 9 has been a fixture of Leonard Street in Grand Rapids since 1890. It has housed many businesses since being decommissioned as a fire station in 1966. Currently residing within its walls is the newest addition to the West Michigan beer scene.
Friends since kindergarten, co-founders and brewers Chris Andrus and Max Trierweiler went into their separate careers, but wanted to find something they could do together.
"Max and I have been best friends since kindergarten," co-owner and brewer Chris Andrus said. "We played baseball together. Eventually, I was a musician and he was in marketing, and we started talking about something we could do together."
The two began homebrewing together and continued for more than four years with the intent of opening their own brewpub.
"We decided to make it a baseball theme," Trierweiler said.
The station was the very first location they scouted, and they looked at plenty.
"We found this place and came back to it," Andrus said. "It has the character and vibe we want."
