Tree Huggers is More than A Store

Tree Huggers is More than A Store

By J. Bennett Rylah

Angela Topp opened her first Tree Huggers in August of 2010 in Holland. The earth-friendly, no-waste retail store there, she says, had the same response when it first opened as when she opened her Grand Rapids branch in East Hills (947 Wealthy St. SE) this summer.

"[Customers are] a little hesitant at first, thinking that we may try to convert them to veganism or have them join Greenpeace," she says, "but they usually get excited once they look around. I think I get more hugs and 'thanks for opening up' than your average business."

New Restaurant Grove Locally Sources More than Just Food

New Restaurant Grove Locally Sources More than Just Food

Grove, the latest restaurant venture from Essence Restaurant Group, opened this Tuesday at 5 p.m. in East Hills. Located at 919 Cherry St. SE, Grove joins a number of local neighborhood eateries and bars, such as The Winchester and The Meanwhile Bar, all expressing a commitment to locally sourced foods and beers. This is not a new concept to Essence, who uses this methodology in the menus of both its other restaurants, downtown's Bistro Bella Vita and Grove's across-the-street neighbor, The Green Well.

Grove Restaurant Opens in East Hills Today

Grove Restaurant Opens in East Hills Today

In a world where restaurants serve over-processed, steroid-enhanced, vitamin-supplemented foods shipped from Outer Mongolia, there are few eateries that are willing to stand up and say ‘No more!'

Grove, the new restaurant from the Essence Group, is just such a restaurant.

The third Essence restaurant, Grove inherits a rich tradition of conscientious service and locally produced food from its predecessors Bistro Bella Vita and The Green Well. However, Grove will have a brand decidedly all its own focused on the 'earth-to-table' movement.

"We certainly don't want to be ‘Green Well Two' or anything like that," said General Manager Rob Tamburello. "Grove is going to be diabolically different from Bistro [Bella Vita] and Green Well."
