Locus Development Redefines the Urban Experience

Locus Development Redefines the Urban Experience

Jake Sebastian

For more than half a century, the city of Grand Rapids was experiencing the disintegration of its urban core. Spurred by a changing economy, families moved to the suburbs and businesses followed. As the urban sprawl grew, the once vibrant city center slowly became an anachronism. In the last decade, however, the model began to change, thanks in large part to developers like John Green and Andy Winkel of Locus Development, a firm based in downtown Grand Rapids that specializes in real estate development and asset management. As the city continues to develop its downtown and surrounding neighborhoods, many people in West Michigan are rediscovering the value of living, working and shopping in an urban community.

Configura: A Swedish Company with a Grand Rapids Home

Configura: A Swedish Company with a Grand Rapids Home

Sweden native Peter Brandinger met Configura CEO Johan Lyreborn water skiing, a sport that Brandinger regards as a passion of his. At the time, Brandinger was working for an Apple dealer, but had it in his mind that one day, he and Lyreborn would work together. He began working for Configura in the early 2000s, but it was in 2005 that Brandinger and his wife packed up and set off for the United States to establish an American office for the company.

First settling on E. Paris and now located downtown at 100 Grandville Ave. SW, the Grand Rapids branch of this furniture design software company recently celebrated its five-year anniversary with Brandinger at the helm.

West Michigan Auto Group Mourns the Passing of its Founder, Marion “Red” Betten

West Michigan Auto Group Mourns the Passing of its Founder, Marion “Red” Betten

It is with great sadness and sorrow that we announce the passing of Marion “Red” Betten.  Earlier this year Red was diagnosed with lung cancer.  After a successful surgery to remove the cancer, he developed complications.  He was surrounded by loving and devoted family when he went home to his Heavenly Father the afternoon of May 26, 2011.

Red was first and foremost a Christian and was unapologetic in applying his faith in Jesus Christ to his business enterprises.  His personal mission was to live his life in such a manner that the image of God would be evident in his life and that the love of Jesus would flow through him.  He would often share the word of God as part of his regular dealings with staff and business associates.

Old Meijer Store Gone

The former Meijer Thrifty Acres Store Number Six at the corner of Fuller and Michigan Avenue in Grand Rapids is now a pile of rubble. The store closed three years ago under the Duthler Family Grocery name according to owner Dave Duthler. The site will be cleared for a new Walgreens Drug Store with a drive thru window. The current neighborhood Walgreens at Diamond and Michigan one block west will close as a result of the new store location.
