Record Store Day Puts a New Spin on Buying Local

Record Store Day Puts a New Spin on Buying Local

From REVUE:

On April 16, independent record stores across the country will celebrate Record Store Day. Though this "holiday" is young, it remains the best way to support the best places to find music: local, independent record stores.

"If you look at a lot of national press on music sales in record stores, it's always negative. However, the secret here is that within the independent sector of record stores, a lot of us are thriving," said Chris Brown, vice president of New England's Bull Moose Records.

Brown is also responsible for first proposing the idea of Record Store Day.

"You know how an idea pops out of your fingers while you're typing?

Brewery Spotlight: Brewery Vivant

Brewery Spotlight: Brewery Vivant

From REVUE:

It's only fitting that worshipers at the alter of ale would have blind faith in microbrews produced inside an old funeral home chapel. Before even opening its heavy wooden door to the public on Dec. 20, Brewery Vivant had sold more than 100 "Monk Club" memberships.

"People joined our mug club before even tasting our beer," said Jason Spaulding, who co-owns the brewery with wife, Kris.

The brewery has nearly reached its 500-member Monk Club capacity in just three months, and is evolving quickly. This might have something to do with the fact that Spaulding has done this before, as co-founder of New Holland Brewing Company.

Tim Horton's Soon To Be Opening

Tim Horton's Soon To Be Opening

As I was driving down Alpine Ave. today I noticed construction in progress where the old Fifth/Third drive thru station is located across from the Meijer's store.  I asked some of the workers at the site what was going on and they informed me that a new mini-mall will be going in soon.  They indicated that a Tim Horton's will be going in as well as a Happy Pizza restaurant, a Sprint dealer as well as other shops and stores.  This is good news for all of you Tim Horton's fans!

Land Banks Rock: A New Tool For Reinvesting In Our Community

Land Banks Rock: A New Tool For Reinvesting In Our Community

A guest editorial by Guy Bazzani

The Kent County Land Bank has the potential to be a fabulous new tool for redeveloping vacant properties in Kent County. As a green urban developer, having chronically vacant properties in neighborhoods impedes our revitalization efforts. They lower property values, invite crime, and can quickly become an eyesore. I strongly encourage everyone to attend the Kent County Land Bank forum on March 23. This innovative idea could be a boon for our redevelopment efforts. Initially, it was hard for me to be enthusiastic about Land Banks. After some prodding from a friend, I did some preliminary research regarding this topic. Now, I am excited!
