Feb. 24 saw 5x5 Night's first installment. What's the impact, and what's the real point? What follows is just Rapid Growth's Managing Editor's opinion.

Bartertown Diner's Resturant Benefit on Feb 21st.

Opening in March, the Bartertown Diner (and Roc's Cupcakes) is throwing a fundraising benefit at Wealthy Theatre (1130 Wealthy St. SE, Grand Rapids), with a showing of "Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome," on Feb. 21st at 8:00 p.m. The movie inspired the diner's name, "Bartertown." Cost is $5; pay $10 and attendees will receive $5 back in "Bartertown bucks." Limited-edition shirts will be sold, and several dessert samples will be provided.

Employee-owned, Bartertown Diner is located at 6 Jefferson St., Grand Rapids. It promotes fresh, seasonal, vegetarian and vegan meals made with local ingredients. Read more here.

Asian Gala 2011 on Mar. 16th

The 2nd Annual Asian Gala will be held on Wednesday, Mar. 16th, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., at the J.W. Marriott Hotel in Grand Rapids MI. The featured keynote speaker will be David Van Andel from the Van Andel Institute. This networking event brings together Asian professionals and community leaders with corporate and community organizations. The Asian Gala fundraiser is hosted by the Asian Professionals Organization and the Asian Health Outreach Foundation.

3rd Annual Local First Sustainable Business Conference on Feb. 23rd

Local First's 3rd Annual Sustainable Business Converence will be held at Aquinas College on Feb.23rd, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. A casual reception follows from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Session topics include Marketing, Advertising & Social Media; Creating Excellent Customer Service; Making Sustainability Profitable; and Maximizing the Benefits of a Local First Membership.

This year's keynote speaker is Justin Rashid, co-founder of American Spoon, a Petosky, MI producer of fruit butters, preserves and fine jams. Mr. Rashid is a former Detroit News "Michiganian of the Year" and served on the Michigan Food Policy Council.
