The Great Skate Raises More Than Money.
The Great Skate Raises More Than Money.

With the Sunday evening temperatures approaching 40 degrees it was a great time to stroll over to Rosa Parks Circle to take part in the Grand Rapids Griffins Great Skate. This annual event spans a full twenty-four hours of skating, activities, fund raising and fun.

As of 8pm when I arrived, the Griffins players, staff and some local volunteers had raised over $14,000 for the Grand Rapids Griffins Youth Foundation. Each individual player, some staff and even Forest Hills Northern and Eastern High School Hockey team all are taking pledges and even money from people showing up to skate.

While there, Griffin's defense man Sebastien Piche was the "on duty" skater for the 8pm hour with the final skater being goalie Tom McCollum.

The event is more than just raising money. It is about having the Griffins players and staff be able to interact with the community and the people whom support the hockey club. While I was there I watched the players engage with fans in conversation, pose for photos and even skate with children. I personally had a fun conversation with Bob Kaiser who is the radio voice of the Griffins and also the  Vice President of community relations.

The Grand Rapids Youth Foundation and the Griffins Hockey Club provide a rare and fun experience to interact with professional hockey players and at the same time raise money for the foundation so kinds in our community have an opportunity to learn the great sport of ice hockey and also so the Youth Foundation can continue to operate the ice skating rink each winter at Rosa Parks Circle in our wonderful city of Grand Rapids.

With such a great event in our downtown, you should get out next year for the event. You never know, you might be skating with the next star Red Wing player. While I was there, a phone bidder called in to donate a couple hundred dollars. You may of heard of him, Current Red Wing Goalie and former Griffin, Jimmy Howard.
