GRFD announces Daniel Overbeek is 2012 Firefighter of the Year | Community Spirit

The Grand Rapids Fire Department is pleased to announce that Firefighter Daniel Overbeek has been selected as the 2012 Grand Rapids Firefighter of the Year. The selection was made by the American Legion – Furniture City Post #258
Firefighter Overbeek was selected for this honor for the positive example he displays to young firefighters through his dedication to his duties. His caring attitude and dedication to the department is reflected in his daily performance. He received the Medal of Valor in 2003, credited with saving a woman from the Grand River. This is the fourth time Dan has been nominated for the award. Dan was also involved and received recognition for rescuing a trapped firefighter that same year. Overbeek was appointed as a Firefighter for the City of Grand Rapids in 1988. He currently works out of the Plainfield Fire Station on the city’s northeast quadrant.
Dan is married to Lori Overbeek, they have 3 children. His wife and oldest daughter are teachers. His youngest daughter is studying to become a teacher. His son is serving his country as part of the Army National Guard in Afghanistan.
Firefighter Overbeek will be recognized at the annual Firefighter of the Year Banquet, sponsored by the American Legion – Furniture City Post # 258. The Banquet will be held at the Boat & Canoe Club, 401 North Park St. NE on Friday, April 20, 2012.
