Grand Rapids organizations help build a children’s museum for Newtown, CT

(GRAND RAPIDS, MI) January 11, 2013-In light of the tragedy last month at Sandy Hook Elementary, the arts and cultural community of Grand Rapids is teaming up to help the community of Newtown, CT heal through play.

“On the afternoon of the tragic shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, I received a phone call from the 9 year old son of our board president.  He asked, simply, if there was anything we could do to help,” describes Robert Dean, executive director of the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum. “We had a board meeting a few days later.  ‘What could we do that would have a lasting effect?’ challenged one board member.  Another spoke about how this event reminded her how much we all need children’s museums and other places where kids can just be kids. We talked about the powerful healing which comes from play.  If we could give them what we have, then maybe it might help, at least some.”

It was then pointed out that while Newtown does not have a children’s museum yet, they are in the process of raising funds to build the EverWonder Children’s Museum.  According to their website, EverWonder Children’s Museum is focused on building “a bright spot for the children and families of our community” but is in need of a permanent home.  “They sound just like us, about 20 years ago,” observed one of the GRCM original founders.

To help give the gift of play to a town so deserving, the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum along with the Grand Rapids Art Museum are donating $1.00 of every admission on Saturday, January 26, 2013 to the EverWonder Children’s Museum building efforts.  The Grand Rapids Public Museum will also be collecting donations on the 26th from patrons to add to the gift to EverWonder Children’s Museum.

The Association of Children’s Museums and the Association of Midwest Museums are offering their support to this special project and are spreading the word of what the community of Grand Rapids, Michigan is doing and encouraging others to join in this special project.
