'Little Prairie in the Big City' September 23

“We are looking forward to showcasing the amazing benefits of the 'Little Prairie in the Big City,'” said Sister Lucille Janowiak, coordinator of the Prairie Committee on the Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids campus. “This little prairie offers a much needed habitat where diverse plants and wildlife can flourish. It offers a contemplative space for connecting with, and discovering, Michigan’s treasures,” she said.

The public is invited to attend a program exploring the offerings of the prairie with committee members, including: Michael Bruggink, owner of Fen View Design LLC, Chris Muldoon, master gardener, Joyce Tuharsky, naturalist and teacher, artist and photographer Dee Versluis.

The program, sponsored by Dominican Center Marywood, will be held Monday, September 23 at 6:30 p.m. (The rain date is September 24 at 6:30 p.m.) The campus is located at 2025 E. Fulton with parking off of Lakeside Drive (see map to free DCM parking below). The prairie is located at the northwest corner of the intersection of Fulton and Lakeside NE.

The program begins at the prairie site. After an introduction, participants will move at short intervals to four marked stations, where they will meet with a committee member who will highlight some feature of the prairie.

Following the outdoor stations, participants will move into the Marywood Health Center. There, a short visual will be shown that summarizes the merits of native plants and grasses that make up prairies and increasingly, residential gardens. Participants will then have an opportunity to visit displays and converse with native plant experts and generous partners from Fen View Design, Michigan Wildflower Farm, Romence Gardens and the River City Wild Ones.
