Grand Rapids (WZZM)

April 2011 in Grand Rapids was a little warmer than average but much cloudier and wetter than usual.

Temperatures in April averaged 46.7°F, 0.4°F above average, but 6.9°F cooler than last year (53.6°F).  Fifteen days were cooler than usual, thirteen were cooler and two were average.  The highest temperature occurred on April 10 with 85°F while the lowest temperature occurred on April 1 with 27°F.

Precipitation was well above average last month with 7.19”, 3.71” more than usual and 3.38” more than last year (3.81”), making it the second wettest on record after 1909 (8.29”).  There were sixteen days with measurable precipitation, which is three days more than average (13). 

Snowfall was below average last month with 1.9”, 0.9” less than usual but 1.9” more than last year (trace).

There was 39.3% of the possible sunshine last month, 10.7% less than usual and 18.2% less than last year (57.5%), making it the 6th cloudiest on record.  There was one clear day – five less than average (6), seventeen partly cloudy days - ten more than usual (7), and twelve cloudy days – five fewer than average (17).  

Temperature records: high of 85°F on April 10 broke the previous record of 84°F set in 1930 and set a new record for the warmest temperature so early in the season.  Low of 54°F on April 10 tied the highest minimum temperature record set in 1945. 

Snowfall records: 1.8” on April 18 broke the previous record of 0.8” set in 1947; a trace of snow on April 26 tied the record set in 1917, 1931, 1932, 1945, 1950, and 1996.

Barometer records: 30.42” on April 21 tied the record highest reading set in 1946.
