Grand Rapids (WZZM)-

Temperatures in May averaged 60.0°F, 1.9°F below average and 1.7°F cooler than last year (61.7°F).  Seventeen days were warmer than usual, thirteen were cooler and one was average.  The highest temperature occurred on May 30 with 89°F while the lowest temperature occurred on May 5 with 33°F.  Temperatures for the spring season averaged 46.8°F, 0.5°F above average but 5.4°F cooler than last spring (52.2°F).

Precipitation was above average last month with 4.54”, 1.19” more than usual and 0.74” more than last year (3.80”).  There were fifteen days with measurable precipitation, which is four days more than average (11).  Spring precipitation was well above average with 15.74”, 6.32” more than usual and 6.96” more than last spring (8.78”), making it the third wettest on record after 1976 (16.37”) and 2004 (16.12”).

Snowfall was exactly average last month with 0.0”; spring snowfall amounted to 3.1”, 8.7” less than usual but 1.1” more than last spring (2.0”).  The season snowfall from October 2010 through May 2011 was 74.0”, 1.8” more than usual.

There was 53.8% of the possible sunshine last month, 1.7% less than usual and 8.6% less than last year (62.4%).  There were four clear days – three less than average (7), nineteen partly cloudy days - ten more than usual (9), and eight cloudy days – seven fewer than average (15).
