My Town: 'The Surprising Story of the Three Little Pigs'

LOWELL, Mich.-- The community is invited to this hilarious comedy production written by Linda Daugherty.

Daugherty combines three classic fairy tales, “The Three Little Pigs”, “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” and the “Three Billy Goats Gruff" and includes some surprising twists. A cast of 16 local students and adults from Lowell, Saranac, Grand Rapids and Belding brings this fun production to life.

This comedy takes place Saturday, Jan. 24 at 7:00 p.m. at the Lowell High School Performing Arts Center, located at 11700 Vergennes.

Admission is $5.00 and tickets are available at the door. The Box Office opens at 6:30 p.m. Tickets can also be purchased online at https://threelittlepigsjan24.eventbrite.com.

My Town: Marshland Trio Monday Night at the B.O.B

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- The West Michigan Jazz Society is hosting a Monday Night Jazz series this season at Bobarinos on the second floor of the B.O.B.  

Monday, Jan.19 is the first Jazz Night at Barbarinos located at 20 Monroe in downtown Grand Rapids. Guests will have the opportunity to experience the Marshland Trio from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

The Tom Hagen Trio will take the stage Feb. 16;  the schedule also includes "My Thin Place" on March 16 and "Tony Reynolds Trio" on April 20. For more information visit www.wmichjazz.org.

My Town: Time to trash the tree!  Free Christmas tree recycling locations

Christmas is over, which means it’s time to trash the tree.

Many municipalities are offering free tree recycling services to residents with a natural tree.  Some communities are planning to put the trees through a chipper and use the remnants to cover park trails and other green spaces.  Here is the schedule for live tree drop-offs:

Ada Township (Through Jan. 12)

  • Ada Township Park, from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

 

Alpine Township (Through Jan. 31)

  • Behind Township Hall, 5255 Alpine Ave. NW

 

Cannon Township (Through Jan. 10)

  • West side of the township building; RHS Honor Society will help unload trees Jan. 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (donations encouraged)

 

Courtland Township (Through Jan. 31)

  • Fire Station #1 on 14 Mile Road

My Town: Goodwill Industries of Greater G.R. offers 'Annie' donation deal

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—Clean out your closets, help people find jobs and get a deal on tickets for Broadway Grand Rapids with the new deal by Goodwill Industries of Greater Grand Rapids.

The nonprofit organization is offering $20 off tickets to “Annie” to people who donate gently used clothing or household items to any Goodwill store. You can find the list of locations here. The coupon is good for select seats during the Jan. 13 performance at DeVos Performance Hall.  Goodwill will also be accepting gently used coats at DeVos Hall on opening night.

“Annie” runs through Jan. 13-18.  The musical is centered on a determined orphan who journeys through New York looking for her parents.  Her adventure includes foiling the plots of Miss Hannigan, who runs the orphanage; meeting President Franklin Delano Roosevelt; and finding a new home with billionaire Oliver Warbucks.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- "Sip in the City" and help the Friends & Families of Cystic Fibrosis during this benefit Friday, Dec. 19 at Bar Divani.

Ticket holders can enjoy fine food and beverages along with local art and entertainment during this event, which runs from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.  A portion of the proceeds will go to FFCF.

My Town: A dozen children to 'Shop with a Hero' for the holidays

CASCADE, Mich. – A group of Grand Rapids area children is getting some help with filling the space under their Christmas trees.

Tuesday, a dozen children from Coit and East Leonard elementary schools will meet up with Grand Rapids police officers and firefighters to “Shop with a Hero.”  Each child will be given a $100 Meijer gift card to purchase holiday gifts for family and friends at the Meijer store at 1997 E. Beltline Ave. NE. Community Officer Neil Gomez says the children chosen to participate work hard in school while facing financial hardships at home.

This is the third year Grand Rapids police and firefighters have teamed up with Meijer for the event.  Including this year, Meijer has donated $4,000 to the event, helping 40 children.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- Be a part of the largest holiday 5K race to fight arthritis!

This is your chance to wear a holiday themed costume, tie jingle bells to your shoe laces and raise funds to help beat arthritis, the nation’s leading cause of disability.

Registration for the Jingle Bell Run/Walk closes at 8:00 a.m. Friday, Dec. 12. Walk-in registration will be available during packet pick-up on Friday, Dec. 12, from 12 p.m.  to 6 p.m. at Gazelle Sports, located at 3930 28th Street in Grand Rapids.

Walk-in registration is available right before the Jingle Bell Run on Saturday, Dec. 12 at Grand Valley State University in the Eberhard Center, located at 301 W. Fulton St. EC 210. Doors open at 7:30 a.m.
