My Town EGR: Late Philanthropist's generosity on display Dec. 3

My Town EGR: Late Philanthropist's generosity on display Dec. 3

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—Nearly five months after his death, philanthropist Peter Wege is still finding a way to give back to the West Michigan community.

Wege passed away July 7.  The East Grand Rapids native was 94 years old.

Wege took on the role of Steelcase vice chairman after his father's death more than 60 years ago.  He built his fortune as the popularity of metal furniture grew.  The Air Force veteran was also passionate environmentalist, coining the term “economicology.”  Wege donated $20 million to the LEED certified Grand Rapids Art Museum, and was the lead donor of the Wege Center at Mercy Health Saint Mary’s.  He also supported Grand Rapids Public Schools and The Grand Rapids Ballet.

GRAND HAVEN, Mich.-- Woodrow Wilson is widely known as an idealistic progressive,  but he was much more complicated than the textbooks make him out to be -- in his prejudices, his racy relationships, his political maneuvering, and his view of war and peace.

On Thursday, Dec. 4, Loutit District Library presents Gleaves Whitney, director of Grand Valley State University's Hauenstein Center, who will discuss the real Woodrow Wilson.

My Town: Degas sculpture at the center of new GRAM exhibition

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—A sculpture by world renown artist Edgar Degas is at the heart of a new holiday exhibit at the Grand Rapids Art Museum.

Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park is loaning its Degas sculpture, “Dancer Looking at the Sole of Her Right Foot” to the GRAM for its newest display, “Re-Envisioning The Nutcracker.”   The exhibition will be open through Jan. 11, 2015.

"It connects the Museum's collaboration with the Grand Rapids Ballet to Degas's work. He was a 19th century master who was fascinated by the movements and poses of the ballet. Degas made innumerable paintings, drawings and sculptures of ballerinas, and this is one of his finest," said Ron Platt, GRAM chief curator.
