NEW Downtown Farmers Market!

Beginning June 2, 2011, the David D. Hunting downtown YMCA will hold a Farmers Market in the back section of their parking lot.   The market will take place on Thursdays from 3pm to 7pm.    Fresh fruit and vegetables will be available and Michigan Bridge Cards, cash or debit cards will be accepted!   Visit the Farmers Market Facebook page for more details.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI -  I just attended my first TEDx session and it was an eye-opening experience.  TEDx Grand Rapids drew a sold out crow of 600 people to the Civic Theatre downtown. 

A diverse group of 16 speakers from different areas of expertise shared their ideas on innovation.

11 Mile silent bicycle ride

On Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 7:00 PM, the 7th annual Grand Rapids Ride of Silence will take place.   The Ride of Silence is a worldwide bicycle event that occurs yearly on the third Wednesday of May.  Cyclists take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways.

West Michigan Council Camp Fire USA

The West Michigan Council Camp Fire USA has After-School and Summer programs in ten Grand Rapids Public Schools and also the Camelot Woods Apartment Community Building. The programs are being attended Monday thru Friday by over 1,500 youth during the 2010/2011 program year.

The 33 week After-School program has an academic component where boys and girls practice reading and math, they also can get help with their homework. Then the kids have activities, such as dance, art, poetry, music, drama club, service-learning and field trips.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI  (May 3, 2011) – Award-winning David Shifrin is a revelation in just how beautifully the clarinet can be played. St. Cecilia Music Center in Grand Rapids will present Shifrin in concert on Thursday, May 19 at 7:30 p.m.

In constant demand as an orchestral soloist, recitalist and chamber music collaborator, clarinetist David Shifrin is one of only two wind players to have received the Avery Fisher Prize since the award’s inception in 1974. A sought after chamber musician, he collaborates frequently with such distinguished ensembles and artists as the Guarneri, Tokyo, and Emerson String Quartets, Wynton Marsalis and pianists Emanuel Ax and André Watts.
