Ford Presidential Museum offers free admission on April 8th

News Release:

Grand Rapids, Mich.- Join the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in celebrating Mrs. Ford's 93rd birthday on Friday, April 8, 2011.  The Museum will offer FREE ADMISSION from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.  Birthday cake, donated by Meijer, will be given to the first 750 visitors.

Included in the free admission is the Ford Museum's feature exhibit, The American Soldier. The courage, camaraderie and human drama of U.S. servicemen and women in action is captured in 116 pictures chosen for a unique exhibition.

It assembles images taken from the earliest use of photographic apparatus to today's digital cameras, and covers Americans in the Civil War, Spanish-American War, Boxer Rebellion, World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, Afghanistan and Iraq. Support for The American Solider is provided by the National Archives and Records Administration and the Gerald R.

Kids activities at butterflies in bloom

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) - I heard butterflies in bloom is going on at the Frederick Meijer Gardens. There are 40 different species of butterflies and moths, and lots of fun activities for kids.

The West Michigan Genealogical Society's May meeting features Donna Odom, executive director of the Southwest Michigan Black Heritage Society in Kalamazoo, board member of the Kalamazoo County Historical Society and steering committee member of the Kalamazoo Race Exhibit Initiative. She will speak on conducting oral history preparation, research, interviews and documentation.

The presentation is free to the public, held in the Ryerson Auditorium of the Grand Rapids Public Library at 1:30 p.m. Parking is free with ticket validation at the library's information desk.

This class is designed for those who already have a working knowledge of computers and the Internet. Learn the basics of how to search and apply for jobs online, including how to create an online resume, search for jobs online using job search engines, and the basics of filling out online job applications.

A confidential support group for those experiencing the struggles and challenges of infertility meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm. Meetings include speakers, doctors, videos, support and fellowship. Open to anyone experiencing miscarriages, neonatal death, the inability to get pregnant or secondary infertility, led by Marj Timmerman, Parish Nurse. Located in The Vine at First United Methodist Church - 207 East Fulton St, Grand Rapids.

WMGS Hosts Dr. Keith G. Calkins on April 2nd

The Western Michigan Genealogical Society's April 2nd meeting topic is Family Finder DNA Testing, with Dr. Keith G Calkins, an Associate Professor of Math & Science at Andrews University. Dr. Calkins will discuss autosomal DNA testing, Y-DNA, mt-DNA, and Inbreeding Coefficients, all used to help genealogists trace lineage and detect inherited medical conditions.

The meeting starts at 1:30 p.m. in the Grand Rapids Public Library's Ryerson Auditorium. Saturday parking is free; make sure to validate your parking exit ticket in the machine at the library's information desk in the lobby. For more information, click here.
