“To remain healthy, you need ten hugs a day,” explained current Naturopathic Institute of Therapies & Education student Asher Thayer at a recent free community workshop about natural healing remedies. 

Held at the newly-opened Elder & Sage Herbs and Natural Remedies, 944 Fulton East near Diamond, the workshop provided participants with a wealth of knowledge regarding essential oils and Bach flower essences including a recipe for homemade hand sanitizer and a personalized test to identify flower essences to suit their needs.

PETA ranks Marie Catrib's as #2 best vegan sandwich in U.S.

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - The animal rights group, PETA is recognizing a Grand Rapids restaurant as one of the best in the United States. PETA is celebrating National Sandwich Month by ranking the top five vegan sandwiches in the country.

After scouring hundreds of menus, PETA chose Marie Catrib's as first runner up for its Sweet Potato & Quinoa Burger Sandwich.

The Sweet Potato & Quinoa Burger Sandwich features protein-packed quinoa (KEEN-wah), onions, cilantro, and almonds. It is also topped with vegan mayo and ginger-tomato chutney.

Taking first place is The Revenge from Strange Matter in Richmond, Va.

The Hunt for a Cure Camouflage Ball will be held on Saturday, August 6, 2011.  This fun event is a major fundraiser for research for Cystic Fibrosis at MSU.  This year the event is being held at Devos Place in downtown Grand Rapids and tickets are still available.  During the event there are best dressed camo awards, raffles, silent and live auctions.  A good time is sure to be had by all and it benefits such a great cause.  For more information and for other events being held in the area visit www.huntforacure.com

American Cancer Society hosts western-themed fundraiser Aug. 11

GRAND RAPIDS - The American Cancer Society's popular "Cattle Baron's Ball" fundraiser has a new dance partner this August.

The ACS "Stampede" is a western-themed party to be held Thursday, August 11 at EVE inside The B.O.B. in downtown Grand Rapids.

Guests are encouraged to dress in western attire with prizes awarded for "Best dressed Cowboy and Cowgirl," "Big Dallas Hair," as well as a bull riding competition held inside Crush nightclub, while nationally recognized DJ Rekka will keep your boots stomping on the dance floor.

Two different ticket packages are available.

The $10 general admission ticket is good for entrance into to EVE from 9:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m..

New organic market opens in Grand Rapids

(WZZM) - The newest organic market has opened in West Michigan.  Nourish Organic Market in the 600 block of Wealthy Street will sell organically grown fruits, vegetables and whole grains as well as grass fed meats and dairy and other locally made products.

Sheri Rop, the owner of the market, says she opened the store because she is passionate about providing healthy food and educating people on what they eat and where their food comes from.  On the shelves with the products are information cards that explain how the product was made and the producer it came from.

Rop plans to hold classes and cooking demonstrations.  The market will hold its official grand opening ceremony in the fall.

The American Red Cross of Greater Grand Rapids introduces its newly revised Wilderness and Remote First Aid course, which is designed for scouts, outdoor enthusiasts and people who work in remote wilderness environments.

The American Red Cross course is based on the Boy Scouts of America Wilderness First Aid Curriculum and Doctrine Guidelines with enhanced content to meet OSHA's Best Practices for Workplace First Aid Programs. The courses offer flexibility for organizations and their instructors to adapt the training to varying environments, from camps and parks, to remote occupational settings.

The 16-hour Wilderness and Remote First Aid course gives people the hands-on skills needed to respond in an emergency when help may be delayed. The course includes training on:
