GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- At Mel Trotter Ministries, a meal means hope, community and joy this Christmas. The Ostrander family decided to make their Christmas about giving back.

Rick Ostrander says, "We've been blessed in so many ways so we wanted to give our kids a chance to contribute to people in other ways."

But Mr. Ostrander says, it was truly his wife's idea since most of their children are either in high school, college or returning from  programs abroad.

"Their ages make it a good thing to do and they can process that this really is helpful to other people."

Ryan Ostrander says, "Obviously in Ecuador there's a lot more poverty that you see all the time but there are still tons of ways we can help back in our cities."

For Anna Ostrander giving back is a reminder of what she has.

"I guess it's just a reminder that not everyone even has a good meal for Christmas and it's good to just serve them and give back to them."

The men and women were all served two separate meals.
