Shelter from the cold at Mel Trotter Ministries

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Grand Rapids is experiencing killer cold, and unless they come inside at night, homeless people in west Michigan are risking their health and even their lives.

"The weather is too bad for anyone to be under a bridge or anywhere outside trying to survive," says Rev. Leonard McElveen, Mel Trotter Ministries Asst. Vice President of Programs.

On extremely cold nights Mel Trotter Ministries in downtown Grand Rapids is one place anyone who needs shelter can go to get warm.

We will make room for them,
confirms Rev. Leonard McElveen.

When it
s bitter cold Mel Trotter accepts guests all night: men, women, young, old, drunk or sober.

Even people they
ve banned for violating the rules are allowed inside in sub- zero weather.

"Our mission is to make sure everyone in the city of Grand Rapids who does not have a place to stay can stay here at Mel Trotter Ministries," says Rev. McElveen. "It's our business. It's what we do."
