Arsonist sentenced

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- 24-year old Joseph McIntyre will spend the next 20 for 40 years in prisons for the arsons he set between July and October 2010.

Joseph McIntyre was convicted last month on 12 counts of arson and home invasion. A jury rejected McIntyre's insanity defense during his trial.

Two victims from the arson fires spoke in court Tuesday, sharing their personal burdens from the fires.

McIntyre issued a personal apology to those affected by the fires.

"To everyone involved, I'm sorry for everything that has happened, my intentions were not to cause damage to put fear into your lives, my behavior was out of character and was not to put anyone in harms way. I'm not a monster", said McIntyre.

After the sentencing, McIntyre's mother collapsed in the courtroom, but was quickly revived.

Police put McIntyre under surveillance last September, after catching him in the act of setting his last fire.
