LED technology debuts in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- The Wealthy Theatre will hold its third annual 'Trip the Light' performance arts event Saturday evening.

The event features the work of 50 artists, combined into an evening of energy, light, and motion. This year,  there is a play on words, as a new form of professional LED lighting, the first of its kind in the United States, will debut during the performance.

"At first I thought it was a happy coincidence that the event and the American debut of this light, will be at an event called 'Trip the Light,'" said Wealthy Theatre director Erin Wilson.

LED lighting in theaters is nothing new, but the spotlight at the heart of the performance is. Manufactured by Electronic Theatre Controls from Wisconsin, the revolutionary new technology could potentially help pave the way for more cost-efficient community theatre operations.

Wealthy Theatre managers believe the cutting edge LED lighting will significantly cut costs, as they move towards a greener future. .

"To have the ability to reduce our electrical bill by 95 percent, that would change everything for us," said director Erin Wilson.

However, more funding is needed to convert the entire theatre over to a 100 percent LED light system.

Wealthy Theatre doors open at 7 p.m. Saturday for "Trip the Light," with the show beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets at the door are $15 per person.

The Trip the Light performance is a combined effort between Dance in the Annex and ArtPeers, in collaboration with Wealthy Theatre.
