GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - An effort is underway here to channel an extra $100,000 into the local food system. That means farms, restaurants, retailers, markets and more.
It's the brainchild of Local First, a group that helps promote Grand Rapids area businesses.
The hope is 1,000 people will pledge to shift $10 of their weekly food spending to a local source. That might mean buying beans at Meijer instead of Walmart, or coffee at Madcap, instead of Starbucks.
Kate Leeder, an employee at Art of the Table on Wealthy Street said "when you shop here, you're supporting people who live in the neighborhood, work in the neighborhood, and that's really important."
