Drums and swing set create ArtPrize art | News

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Many of the exhibits in this year's ArtPrize contest include music -- but one on Calder Plaza needs your help to work.
The "Swing Set Drum Kit" is behind the Gerald R. Ford federal courthouse in downtown Grand Rapids.
Three swings are connected to large wheels, and when set in motion the drumsticks strike the instruments.
Creator Dave Ford, formerly of Grand Rapids, also threw in old shoes and fly swatters for special effects.
He says he tries to find a common energy source and play with it.
"It makes people think about expanding everyday energy and everyday experiences and make it something larger. I think that makes it art," Ford says.
Ford changes the instruments each day, and plans to hang pots and pans from the trees and connect them to his set this weekend.
