ArtPrize hoping to emerge from $3.8 million debt

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - ArtPrize is going to be around for quite a while.

At a kickoff breakfast Wednesday morning, organizers announced dates for ArtPrize 2013 and every year through 2017. ArtPrize 2013 will be from September 18 to October 6.

Artist registration for 2013 begins on April 22. Venue registration begins March 11.

Organizers also announced that they expect to operate 2013 at "break-even" levels or make a profit. ArtPrize Interim Director Daryn Kuipers hopes to operate this year in the black.

ArtPrize also hopes to pay off $3.8 million of debt. Donors are being asked to help and the amount will be matched. "It's an anonymous partner that knows that start-up companies have to take on debt to get started," said Kuipers.

The loan is through the Dick and Betsy DeVos Foundation. According to ArtPrize, this is what the money was used over the past four years. The biggest expense was technology and infrastructure. The other would be marketing/public relations.

ArtPrize also has 10 full-time and 15 seasonal employees. Finally, there is the cost involved in the ceremonies/award money handed out.

Rick DeVos, founder and chairman of ArtPrize, also announced a partnership with Walker Art Center in Minneapolis called ArtPrize Pitch Night.

Following an open call, five artists or curators from Minnesota will compete for $5,000 to install their work at the Gillett Bridge in Grand Rapids.
