Become a Bone Marrow Donor; Save a Life

Become a Bone Marrow Donor; Save a Life

While volunteering this past weekend with WZZM13 and our “Make a Difference Day” event on the GVSU campus in Allendale, I was surprised to realize how little I really knew about bone marrow transplants. I’m sure a lot of you feel the same.

The main thing I learned was that 75% of the time, if you needed a bone marrow transplant, your immediate family would not qualify, meaning they would not be a match. That is when you turn to a place such as Michigan Blood. They are also connected to the National Registry.

Initiatives That Could Help Prevent Elder Fraud

Initiatives That Could Help Prevent Elder Fraud

Senior Citizens and their families lose $3 Billion a year to con artists. What can we do to stop them?

This is a statement on the cover of the latest Consumer Reports magazine. In a recent study, about 1 in 20 seniors said they were financially abused. If a new disease struck that many older Americans the report noted, a public health crisis would likely be declared.

Opinion: My take on Artprize so far this Year

Opinion: My take on Artprize so far this Year

My friend Pat & I went downtown for Artprize on opening day, Wednesday, September 23rd. Lots to see but we did not see anything that actually jumped out at us, like WOW! Have our expectations become too high because of all the awesome and unusual art displays we have seen in the past 6 years?

One picture did take us by surprise in the walkway from DeVos Place over to the Grand Plaza. It is a picture of a bridge, done in a brushed aluminum affect and it looks like you can actually step on it and cross over. So realistic that I actually got dizzy and a little on the nausea side, like it draws you in. Very unusual.

Glow Ball Golf Fundraiser Event at the Pines

Glow Ball Golf Fundraiser Event at the Pines

Terry Hunt is heading up a Charity event on September 11th and then again on September 18th for his sister in law Monica Hunt, 53 years of age, who is suffering from cancer.

This will be an unusual event; it’s Glow Ball Golf, to be held at the Pines located at 5050 Byron Center Ave, phone number 616-538-8380. Terry and his family are paying for all the equipment to be used for this unusual event and all the equipment will remain at the golf course for charity events to be held in the future, thereby saving participants a lot of money.

This event is scheduled to start at dusk on both dates but participants are asked to be at the golf course one hour earlier. The cost for this event is $35 on September 11th and $25 on September 18th. It will be 4-man teams but if you do not have a team to play with, don’t let that stop you. You will be paired up with other people so you can play. Terry can be reached at 616-406-7701.

Fund Raiser for The Dave Weykamp Family

Fund Raiser for The Dave Weykamp Family

A fund raiser is being planned for the Dave Weykamp Family, to be held at St. Peter & Paul’s School Gym, in Grand Rapids, MI on Saturday, October 17th at 5:30pm.

Dave Weykamp, age 52, passed away on December 28, 2014 after months of treatment for AML Leukemia. His wife Jill has been fighting Multiple Myeloma since April of 2013, while still caring for their two sons, Anthony & Nicholas. Right now she is in a state of remission, thanks to all the medical treatments and prayers from many people.

As any family knows who has been touched by this disease, treatment costs are staggering, leaving families in dire straits. Thus, the reason behind this fund raiser event, being put together by the Boy Scout Troop that both Weykamp boys belong to.
