Gerontology Network named a finalist in Toyota's 2012 100 Cars for Good program

GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN (MAY, 2012)  Gerontology Network is pleased to announce it has been selected as one of 500 nonprofit finalists in Toyota’s 100 Cars for Good program, a major philanthropic event in which the automaker is giving 100 cars to 100 organizations over 100 days.

 Each day from May 14th to August 21st five organizations will compete via 100carsforgood.com to win a Toyota of their choice.  The organization with the most votes each day wins.  Gerontology Network will compete against four other non-profit organizations to win a Toyota Sienna Mobility van on August 21st.

Transportation plays a vital role in providing access to critical services for older adults with limited mobility.  Gerontology Network provides services to over 3500 seniors every year, including transportation.  Ger

Community Planning Committee Announced for Monument and Veteran's Memorial Parks

Mayor George Heartwell and Downtown Development Authority Chair Brian Harris today announced the members of the community-based planning committee that will guide the historic evaluation, master planning and eventual rehabilitation of two key downtown public parks.

"Monument and Veteran's Memorial parks are the front yard for the Children's Museum, the Public Library and numerous local businesses and residences," Mayor George Heartwell said. "Rehabilitating these historic public spaces supports the ongoing revitalization of downtown and will enhance the quality of life in our city. We are thankful so many thoughtful community leaders have volunteered to help make this project successful."  

City High Wind Ensemble Performing “Environments Concert”

Students from the Center of Instrumental Music’s Wind Ensemble at City High School are performing their first ever Environments Concert on Thursday, April 19, 2012. The students will be performing a program which travels through the ancient elements of air, earth, fire, and water. There will be traditional style band pieces, as well as soundscapes and original student compositions.

To start a community conversation about this regionally important corridor, all you need is a free copy of Quality of LIFE, the new "meeting-in-a-box" game produced by the Grand Rapids Planning Department. The fun yet instructive game is designed to start a meaningful dialogue among neighbors, businesses, special interest groups and the public about their ideas for the future of the Michigan Street corridor. The results of the game will be used to inform a corridor planning process that began last fall and will continue through 2012.

East Fulton businesses prepare for 'Shop Hop'

Grand Rapids, MI November 29, 2011 – Caring for neighbors who live around the corner as well as around the world this Christmas season, the Salvation Army will be supporting the East Fulton Business District and their annual “Shop Hop” event. A full evening of “Shop Hop” festivities is planned, including specials and treats from the district’s businesses as well as an opportunity to meet and greet area neighbors and friends. The Salvation Army Brass Band will stroll the East Fulton District, filling the evening air with sounds of Christmas carols. The East Fulton Business District stretches along East Fulton - from Fuller at the east to the Fulton Street Cemetery at the west.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., November 21, 2011 – A special evening in downtown Grand Rapids is scheduled for December 2, 2011, where several businesses and organizations collaborate to offer an expanded holiday experience in the city.  A variety of popular holiday events—tree lighting, ice skating opener, window displays at retailers, a cabaret performance, and free carriage rides—are celebrated together to provide the community with an afternoon and evening packed withdiverse entertainment options.

 

The majestic Christmas Tree on the Grand Rapids Art Museum Wege Plaza will light up during a short ceremony that begins at 5:15 pm.  Live music from the HollyJolly choir will entertain the gathering crowd as Art Museum Board President Mitchell Watt welcomes everyone, introduces the participants, and announces the countdown to light the 40-foot tree.
