Experience Grand Rapids launches personalized travel planning website

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.---Experience Grand Rapids, the official destination marketing organization for Kent County, recently announced the launch of its new personalized travel planning website, www.GRCityTwist.com.

The new interactive website targets 18 different interests, from “art lovers” to “thrill seekers”, allowing the visitor to customize their trip.  For example, craft beer enthusiasts can find breweries to explore, activities and nightlife related to craft beer, and accommodations for the weekend.

EXGR launched the new, mobile-friendly website on Dec. 17 at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park with the hospitality community, business and political leaders, and its Certified Tourism Ambassadors.

Some West Michigan restaurants are honoring miliatry members  this Veterans Day by serving up free meals.

Lakeshore Partnership is also offering a free meal to veterans at 19 of its local McDonald’s restaurants.  Military identification is preferred, but not required.  Participating locations include:

Kent County honors cleanest restaurants with Food Safety Awards

KENT COUNTY, Mich.—Where are the safest places to eat in Kent County?

The county health department is answering that question with the 2013 Food Safety Awards.   The agency whittled down the list of 1,654 eligible restaurants to just 269 facilities, based on routine restaurant and food service inspections over the past year.  Under the county’s criteria, restaurants that earn the award must have a certified food safety manager, no confirmed violations of the Michigan Smoke Free Law and no confirmed foodborne illness outbreaks during the year.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—An ArtPrize entry bringing the beauty of living plants to downtown Grand Rapids is sticking around.

“East of Eden” will remain outside the B.O.B. for at least another year. The 1,400 square foot piece has already been replanted with more than 2,000 winter hardy perennials.

Spring Lake resident and LiveWall employee David MacKenzie created the piece of green art.  “East of Eden” made it into the ArtPrize Top 25 this year.

Cottage Bar makes USA Today's list of top burger joints

(USA TODAY & WZZM)-- Laura Bly, Jayne Clark, Rebecca Heslin and Kitty Bean Yancey compiled this list of the top 51 burger joints in the nation. 

Grand Rapids' own Cottage Bar and Restaurant, located at 18 LaGrave Ave. SE, took the honor in Michigan. 

Alabama

Callaghan's Irish Social Club, a '40s pub-turned-restaurant in Mobile, came up with its signature "L.A. burger" (as in Lower Alabama) to use up leftover sausage from Sunday brunch. Spicy Conecuh pork sausage, an artisanal gold standard made nearby, is mixed into beef patties and dressed with pepper jack cheese, spicy mustard and coleslaw to cool it all off. The favorite of local law enforcement is the Wednesday special, but get there early the line forms before the doors open at 11. It often sells out within an hour.
