New bakery honored for tasty airline creation

KENT COUNTY, Mich.—  A new bakery in East Grand Rapids has earned a sky-high honor.

Cakabakery’s creation for Southwest Airlines’ inaugural event at Gerald R. Ford International Airport has been named “Cake of the Week” by Anna-Aero, an airline network and news analysis website.

The cake was presented Sunday, August 11, when Southwest began service out of Grand Rapids.  The dessert was designed by Jason Kakabaker, owner of Cakabakery, located at 1436 Wealthy St. SE.  Kakabaker was recently featured on Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars,” where he finished second.

Now is your chance to weigh in on road conditions.  The Sustainable Streets Task Force is holding a public forum Thursday, June 27 to help set final recommendations for the future of Grand Rapids’ street system.  The forum begins at 6 p.m.

Michigan State Police will be inspecting and teaching proper child car seat installation June 8, as part of  the Kids Care Event at K&M Dodge.

Families who attend the free safety event can also ahve their child fingerprinted for safety and peace of mind. Free child ID cards will also be provided.

The Kids Care Event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.,  in conjunction with the Mopar Muscle Show.The Muscle Show has a $10 vehicle entry fee that benefits Kids Food Basket.  Public admission is free so come see cool cars and trucks, get some good food, have lots of fun and protect your children at the same time!

The city of Grand Rapids will hold its 2013 Spring Auction June 6.

M&W Incorporated will auction off the city’s used vehicles and construction equipment starting at 9 a.m.  M&W Incorporated is located at 979 West River Center Dr. NE in Comstock Park.Only cash or check will be accepted.

Blue Bridge closes for renovations and a new coat of paint

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—The Blue Bridge will be closed to pedestrians starting in June.

Crews will be repainting and updating the bridge through September.  The renovations also include installing new LED lights and rebuilding sections of the walking deck.  The Downtown Development Authority is investing $716,952 into the project.

The DDA says the bridge should reopen in time for ArtPrize 2013, which starts September 18.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- Experience Grand Rapids and the Kent County Lodging Association have opened the 6th Annual WAVE Award nominations.

The annual awards program recognizes outstanding service providers in the Grand Rapids and Kent County hospitality industry. Nominations will be accepted from employers and guests from April 30 to Oct.7, 2013. One award will be presented in each of the following categories: Transportation, Retail & Service, Attractions/Events, and Nightlife. New categories to the 2013 awards program include: Restaurants/Breweries, Lodging, and Volunteer in Hospitality.

SilverLine construction will change hospital routes

Grand Rapids - The construction of the Rapid's new Silver Line may affect some travel times to Spectrum Health Medical Center through this summer.

The first phase has already begun and will last through June. As part of the project, two stations will be installed on Ransom Avenue near Crescent. A section of Ransom near the Women's Center and Renucci Hospitality House will be closed to cars and pedestrians.

Access to the Center and Hospitality House and Spectrum's Ramp 6 will remain open, but patients and visitors need to give themselves extra time. They can also use the maps and information provided by Spectrum Health at www.spectrumhealth.org/butterworth.

Detour signs will be posted to reroute traffic during construction.
